Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is an oral antiviral drug which is active against herpes viruses. It is used to treat infections with herpes zoster(shingles), herpes simplex genitalis (genital herpes) and herpes labialis (cold sores).

Valtrex is used to treat cold sores (herpes labialis). it is also used to treat genital herpes in patients with a normal immune system. Valtrex (Valacyclovir) can also be used to control genital herpes outbreaks in all patients including those with HIV, this is also known as suppressive therapy. Prevention of CMV disease following organ transplantation.

MECHANISM OF ACTION OF GENERIC VALTREX (VALACYCLOVIR)

Valtrex (Valacyclovir) inhibits the replication of viral DNA which is necessary for them to reproduce themselves. It is actually a “prodrug” that it is not active itself. Valacyclovir is converted into acyclovir in the body which is active against the viruses.

DOSAGES OF GENERIC VALTREX (VALACYCLOVIR)

Valtrex (Valacyclovir) may be taken with or without food. Dosages need to be reduced in patients with kidney disease for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) the usual dose is 1 gm three times a day foe seven days for the treatment of recurrent herpes the usual dose is 500mg twice daily for five days.

DRUG INTERACTION OF GENERIC VALTREX (VALACYCLOVIR):

Drug interactions decreases or increases the concentration of the medication leading to increase in the unpleasant effects or decrease in the effectiveness of the drug. Acyclovir interfere with Valacyclovir hcl and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs also such as ibuprofen, naproxen. Certain depression medications like Duloxetine, anti hypertensive medications such as Rosuvastatin calcium, Atorvastatin and antacid drug Esomeprazole causes interaction with Valacyclovir.
