INDICATIONS OF GENERIC FOSAMAX (ALENDRONATE SODIUM) :

Alendronate Sodium is used in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Alendronate Sodium is used in the treatment of increasing bone mass index in men having osteoporosis. Fosamax is used to treat glucocorticoid induced osteoporosis in men and women. Alendronate Sodium is also used in the treatment of Paget’s disease in both men and women.

MECHANISM OF ACTION OF GENERIC FOSAMAX (ALENDRONATE SODIUM) :

Osteoclasts are responsible for the reabsorption of bones. Osteoclasts are the cells associated with bone which are responsible for the breakdown of bones. Alendronate Sodium inhibits the production of osteoclasts. Because of this the reabsorption of bones decreases and results in increase in bone density.

SIDE EFFECTS OF GENERIC FOSAMAX (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):

• Gastrointestinal problems: Stomach pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, flatulence.
• Neurological problems: Dizziness, headache.
• Sensory problems: Change in taste.
• Skin problems: Rash, itching, hives.
• Respiratory problems: Difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest.
• Other problems: Bone, muscle or joint pain, swelling of legs, hands or joints, swelling or pain in the jaw.

CONTRAINDICATIONS OF GENERIC FOSAMAX (ALENDRONATE SODIUM) :

• Alendronate Sodium is contraindicated in patients suffering from esophageal abnormalities, kidney disease and gastrointestinal problems.
• Alendronate Sodium is contraindicated in nursing mothers.

DOSAGES OF GENERIC FOSAMAX (ALENDRONATE SODIUM) :

The recommended dose of Fosamax (Alendronate Sodium) for the treatment of osteoporosis is 10 mg daily. The recommended dose of Fosamax for the prevention of osteoporosis is 5 mg daily. For the treatment of Paget’s disease, the recommended dose of Fosamax is 40 mg daily for 6 months.

Drug interaction normally changes the mode of action or increases the adverse effects of the medications. Before using Alendronate sodium, tell your doctor about all other medication you are already taking or having allergic reactions to. Non steroidal anti inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Celecoxib and aspirin causes stomach irritation when administered along with Alendronate sodium. Antacids including calcium causes interaction with Fosamax. Iron supplements, magnesium containing medications known to interfere with Alendronate sodium of Fosamax.

• Before taking Fosamax you should discuss about what kind of allergic symptoms this medication cause.
• You should share your medical history with your doctor before using Fosamax. If you are having medical history of esophagus disorders, difficulty swallowing, trouble standing or sitting upright for at least 30 minutes, low calcium level, stomach disorders then talk with your doctor before using Alendronate sodium.
• Very rarely individual taking Fosamax causes jawbone problems and poor dental hygiene or dental surgery increases the risk.
• Medical conditions such as gum disease or infection, cancer and anemia also increase the risk of jawbone problems due to Fosamax.
• Fosamax is not recommended to use in children as severe side effects has been observed in children after the consumption of Fosamax tablet.
• Alendronate of Fosamax might stay in your body for longer time like for many years and yet before becoming pregnant consult your doctor and discuss the possible effects on the unborn baby.
• It is unknown if Fosamax passes into the breast milk and therefore before breastfeeding a baby consult the doctor.

STORAGE OF ENERIC FOSAMAX (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):
